Gucci is a prestigious luxury brand recognized globally for its avant-garde fashion line and impeccable Italian craftsmanship.
It all started in Florence, Italy in 1921 when founder Guccio Gucci opened the House of Gucci and began creating tasteful leather goods.
Gucci Watches History
Guccio Gucci was born in 1881 in Florence, Italy. He spent many years working as an elevator attendant in London’s Savoy Hotel. The job was the inspiration behind his brand.
The elevator attendant in the opulent European hotel came in contact with A-listers like Marilyn Monroe, Claude Monet, Frank Sinatra along with members of English nobility. Handling their baggage gave him a first-hand taste of high end leather luggage. The refined aesthetics stirred him enough to start something on his own.
Coming back to Italy he started selling leather bags to horsemen and attachable leather bags for saddles. The highly skilled Tuscan artisans crafted these leather accessories with exquisite finesse. Gucci nurtured the local talent.
The advent of horseless carriages and mass production of cars saw him graduating to the luxury luggage niche. He established the Gucci brand in 1921.
Continuing to draw inspiration from horse racing, Guccio incorporated the look of horse stirrups into his designs. This has since become an iconic logo throughout Gucci designs.
The label experienced growing success within a short span of time. The international elite vacationing in Florence were enticed by the equestrian inspired Gucci, bags, belts, gloves, trunks and shoes.
He led his brand with great passion until his death in 1953. His sons took over his business and the brand scaled new heights. The label became a status symbol synonymous with Fashion icons, Hollywood celebrities and political heavyweights. The company grew, setting new standards for luxury goods across the globe. Gucci’s offerings expanded beyond luggage & handbags to a diverse selection of products.
Gucci’s foray into the world of Watches is fairly recent. It happened in the early 1970s and it happened by chance.

Enter Severin Wunderman, the Swiss watchmaker. Mr. Wunderman had begun his career in the world of watches as a salesman for Alexis Barthelay, a European watchmaking firm. In the early 1970s he was once on a business trip to New York. He happened to make a business call to the Gucci fashion house. Fate intervened and Aldo Gucci himself (who helmed Gucci brand at the time) answered the phone. It was the seminal moment.
Soon the two men met over a drink. Mr. Wunderman won over Gucci to place a watch order to the tune of $250,000. Once again fate intervened and Wunderman’s employer Alexis Barthelay was unable to fulfill the order.
Undaunted, Wunderman decided to quit his job and execute the order himself. But he did not have that kind of money and told Mr. Gucci so. Admiring his chutzpah, Gucci prepaid the entire order on the spot. By doing so, he put Mr. Wunderman in business.

Wunderman set up his business house Severin Montres with a sales office in Irvine (California). He remained the sole manufacturer and distributor of Gucci watches for close to twenty five years.
The Severin Montres company was the official licensee for Gucci watches. The watches were designed and manufactured at the horological center of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The designs stayed true to the roots of the brand. At the same time they combined Italian style with highest quality precision Swiss craftsmanship.
With grit and determination, Wunderman succeeded in putting Gucci watches on the global fashion map. His stroke of a genius was to blend steel cases with diamonds. The new Gucci watches matched the look of swanky brand names like Omega & Longines. These high end brands crafted their timepieces in gold and silver. In contrast, Gucci watches were more affordable even with all the opulence of diamonds as they were shaped in steel.
The world started buying Gucci watches for fun. The watch-designs took inspiration from totemic themes like the horse-bit chain, green-red-green stripes and the double GG logo. There were even Gucci bangle watches with multiple bezels of different colors which could be changed to match your outfit or mood.

From 1972 to 1996, Severin Montres made and sold Gucci watches developing it into a premium brand. They were hugely successful and second in sales only to Rolex. The partnership came to an end with the death of Aldo Gucci and consequent change of ownership.
The Gucci Group paid $150 million to acquire Severin Montres. The license expired in June 1999 and months of intense negotiations preceded the acquisition. Severin Montres was named Gucci Timepieces. Its headquarters remained in Lengnau, Switzerland. Severin Wunderman stepped down to pursue other interests.
Gucci Timepieces released the first wristwatch in its famous “G-watch” line. The series assimilated the company’s renowned “G” logo into the face of the watch. The following years saw Gucci creating its fully mechanical watch, using time-honored Swiss technology. The first automatically winding watch which was part of 2007’s Pantheon collection was also launched.

Among the other iconic watch designs of Gucci was the 6800. It played off the brand’s famous bamboo handled purses from the 1940s. The bracelets for these watches were crafted out of real bamboo. Alternatively, precious metal was shaped to simulate natural wood.
Later models from the company comprise the “I-gucci,” a digital timepiece. The “Twirl,” featured a solid metal cuff design with an inset face that rotates towards the wrist. The “I-gucci” was also adapted for a special edition “Grammy Awards” design in black & gold. It showed a subtle Grammy logo engraved on the watch’s band.

Leap Forward To The Present.
Gucci has pooled its creative skills and blended it with the unrivaled accuracy of Swiss craftsmanship. It is now a part of the Kering group that includes Alexander McQueen, Brioni & Girard-Perregaux. This gives Gucci access to GP mechanical movements which are recognized for their excellence. The automatic GP03300 began to power Gucci watches in 2013 when it introduced the Gucci Dive.
Gucci’s latest watch models make the most of the high-end technology now available to the brand. At the same time they bring back the zing of the fashion giant’s horological past
